Day Trips from Canmore

The Rockies' Best, All Within Reach

One of the great advantages of staying in Canmore is how easily you can access the Canadian Rockies' most iconic destinations without the crowds and higher prices of resort towns. Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the town of Banff, and the vast wilderness of Kananaskis Country are all within an easy day's drive. Return each evening to the quieter, more relaxed atmosphere of Canmore Rocky Mountain Inn.

Lake Louise & Moraine Lake

Lake Louise, about an hour's drive from Canmore, is one of the most photographed lakes in the world. Its turquoise waters set against the Victoria Glacier create a scene that must be seen to be believed. Walk along the lakeshore, hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House, or simply take in the view. Nearby Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks is equally stunning. Note that Moraine Lake Road requires a shuttle reservation in peak season -- plan ahead for the smoothest visit. Both lakes are at their most vivid from late June through September.

Banff & Kananaskis Country

The town of Banff is just 25 minutes from Canmore and offers the Banff Gondola, hot springs, Bow Falls, and a lively downtown with restaurants and shops. A Banff National Park pass is required for stops within the park. For a quieter alternative, Kananaskis Country lies to the south and offers expansive mountain scenery, hiking trails, and Spray Lakes without the national park crowds. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required for parking. Both areas make for perfect half-day or full-day excursions, with Canmore Rocky Mountain Inn as your peaceful home base.
